Why we need a pool
Skip to menuThe pool is a social environment—not just a place to swim.
- Oakleigh Pool provides a great social environment for our youth and is one of the few affordable places they can gather safely over the long summer holidays.
- It is an informal meeting place for family, friends and people of all ages. Somewhere to go to feel part of the local community.
- The diving tower is the only one in Monash and one of the very few left in Melbourne. It is a drawcard for the pool.
- Apart from the 50-metre pool at the Monash Aquatic Recreation Centre (MARC), Oakleigh is the only outdoor pool serving the 163,000 residents of Monash.
- MARC is difficult and expensive to access by public transport. On hot days last summer, MARC could not meet the demand placed on it by its local population.
- Oakleigh has been named an “activity centre” in Melbourne 2030. Our population and density is increasing. We need local facilities for our local areas.
- A large number of schools used Oakleigh pool for their swimming carnivals. The number of outdoor pool facilities is dwindling.
- With water restraints, we should be encouraging use of public pools instead of backyard pools.
