Election Platforms
Skip to menuTwo of the three councillors elected for the Oakleigh ward ran on the platform of preserving Oakleigh pool.
Councillor Kottek
Councillor Gerry Kottek says, “I appreciate CLAG want the same pool we currently have in a fully functioning state. As a council we need to ensure that is what the other 42,000 residents of Oakleigh want as well.” Councillor Kottek was on the Oakleigh Pool Redevelopment Committee that recommended that the pool close and be replaced with no aquatic facilities. This decision was taken with no consultation whatsoever. Surely Councillor Kottek feels he has some mandate from the people who elected him?
Here is his election platform:
As a Community Labor member and Oakleigh resident for fifteen years I am a strong advocate for local community, local services and local needs. It is important that our council provides quality and affordable services to residents, especially disadvantaged members of our community - children, disengaged youth, people with disabilities, multicultural groups, sole parents and older people. As a concerned citizen, I believe our Council needs to be more responsive and accountable to us. I stand for active community involvement, financial accountability, respectful, honest and transparent governance. We need to improve services for disengaged youth, support our local networks and community groups, protect our public spaces and parklands, stop inappropriate development and ensure financial integrity. Community assets, such as the Oakleigh pool, need to be properly managed and maintained. Let us be proud of our history, conscious of our present and responsible with our future. I ask for your vote.
Councillor Dimopoulos
As the Mayor of Monash, Stephen Dimopoulos has kept our rates the second lowest in Melbourne and given residents priority over developers. Stephen has secured the $23 million Clayton Community Centre; secured $1.5 million for the Oakleigh Pool and brought back the Oakleigh and Clayton Festivals. Re-elect Stephen to finish the job and ensure that community facilities such as libraries and preschools are kept open. Stephen will ensure Council works closely with the police to increase safety on our local streets. He will push for height limits on developments and ensure Council improves footpaths and local roads. You can count on Stephen to protect services for our young, families and the elderly. Stephen grew up in Oakleigh and Hughesdale and lives here with his family. He worked in Clayton for years and owned a café in Oakleigh.
