Question Time a farce

Last Tuesday 27th of June, about 90 of us attended the City of Monash Council Meeting, to protest Council’s decision to close the pool.

The Council was expecting a protest, having learnt from four year ago when they were startled by the outrage at their previous attempt to close the pool.

18 questions were submitted for Question Time and Council moved to allow an extension of time, from 15 to 30 minutes, to allow for them all to be heard.

It soon became apparent that the Councillors were not really answering our questions; merely providing standard responses to the effect that Council had already decided to close the pool, and that community input would be sought for the future of the site. The answers were similar to the standard letters some of you have recieved from Councillors, after writing to them about the pool.

We hope to have all questions and their answers available on the website shortly, so you’ll be able to read them and judge for yourself. People who asked questions—half of whom were teenagers—had thoughtful, probing questions, and Council just didn’t want to listen.

We must attend the next Council Meeting, which is on the 18th of July, in greater numbers. More details will be posted as we approach that date.
