Latest on neighbouring outdoor pools
Skip to menuBoroondara Council has recently completed the refurbishment and heating of a 1959 fifty-metre eight-lane pool, diving pool and learners’ pool for $3 million. The pool will open at the new Boroondara Sports Complex on the 9th of October.
The pool sounds very similar to Oakleigh’s, and was a cold-water pool open only 3 months of the year and patronage was declining. The pool had ageing plant and pipework (like Oakleigh), all pools ran from one treatment system (like Oakleigh) and pipes ran under the pool (you guessed it—like Oakleigh). The $3 million included cover for the two heated pools and lights around the pool for night swimming. It did not include changerooms.
The diving pool—which is not heated—was retained because Boroondara Council believe it has heritage and community value.
This is great news for us. If Boroondara can do it, why not Monash?
In other news, Glen Eira Council has decided to keep two outdoor pools in their city, while developing the surrounding area with other sporting facilities. (Oakleigh is fortunate to already have a golf course, gym, recreation centre, tennis courts and a bike path by the pool).
Glen Eira Council has further decided to open both pools this season (1st November), despite negative reports on the state of the pools. In the words of Glen Eira’s mayor, Councilor Feldman, “you can’t put a price tag on the sense of community that these pools provide, and [Glen Eira] Council is committed to supporting these public facilitie“s.
Given the Oakleigh Pool Redevelopment Committee will be meeting regularly throughout October, find out how you can help. Let Council know you still care.
