Small Victories
Skip to menuAt tonight’s Council meeting (Tuesday 8TH August 2006), Councillor Dimopoulos introduced a motion to broaden the mandate of the Steering Committee to include the possibility of acquatic facilities (that is, a pool) at Oakleigh. In addition to this, they have committed to a “robust process of consultation” which will begin, at the latest, by October this year.
This motion is a good start—allowing the Pool Steering Committee to consider a pool—but is by no means a guarantee that the pool will be saved. It is imperative that we both continue to express our desire to preserve the pool, as well as thank Council and emphasise the advantages of the pool to them.
Councillors Dimopoulos, McGill, Lake and Manzie gave speeches in support of the motion and it passed 10—1. Councillor Morrissey dissented without giving a reason.
Several Councillors mentioned that the public meeting held last Thursday influenced their decisions, and we thank the Councillors who attended for listening to the opinions of Oakleigh residents. CLAG encourages people to replicate their past enthusiasm for the pool during the consultation period to convince Council that it is a worthwhile investment in Oakleigh’s future.
