The Devils Advocate

I have to admit I sit on both sides of the fence here. And while it's fine and dandy to whinge about the pool facing shutdown, there are factors that the council have to take into consideration when making their decisions.

1: Who can safely say that they have used the pool more then twice a week, every single week?! And this us during the weekdays, not just weekends. One of the problems are the numbers of patrons visiting the pool, which is inadequate. And the pool cannot be run if there are hardly any people using it.

2: Water conservation. We are sadly at a point in time where we have to conserve water. The pool as it stands is not living up to current standards.

That said, if worst came to worst and the pool was to be shut down, I hope this community can ge gracious enough to encourage community input into an alternative to the pool.

Cry cut, but stop whinging if you yourself do not use that pool enough to cover maintenance.

1. How many people can safely say they have used MARC more them twice a week, every single week, not just weekends?
One of the problems with Oakleigh is the number of people unable to become patrons because the opening times are too restrictive. Do you know what its opening hours were last summer? Noon to 6pm. Most of us are at work then.
Who attends MARC during the day? Schools and parents with pre-school children. Who attends Oakleigh pool then? Schools - there were 23 schools who held school carnivals at the pool last summer. That's every weekday for Feb and the start of March. Pre-school kids and their parents were unable to use the pool last summer because the two toddlers' pools, and the learners'pool had been closed down.
2. Oakleigh Pool does not leak, it doesn't lose any more water than any other public pool. We need public pools because we have to conserve water. More public pools everyone can share in;less private pools.

It seems you really are advocating the devil.
I haven't used the footpath on the other side of my street today, but I don't believe it should be shut down. I don't use the public library much but I consider it an asset that must remain. Please think of our children and the facilities that they can use in Oakleigh before advocating something expedient, and O so much cheaper, for the Glen Waverley council.

I don't think Oakleigh pool supporters should be characterised as "whingers"; what we are doing is trying to be constructive, raise awareness in the community and trying to change the minds of councillors who do not appear to have any regard for the wishes of their constituents.

Yes, a pool is expensive to maintain, especially one that is open for such a short time. The answer? Invest a bit of money in it; heat it; keep it open for longer; promote it; market it; have more events there; (put it on the front page of the Council's Homepage - like MARC); improve the facilities.

This is a community asset, like the library and parks etc and should be budgeted for appropriately. We pay ever increasing rates for ever decreasing services; we see money being wasted like the inappropriate palm trees on Dandenong Road which all died and had to be replaced - this would have cost 100,000's of dollars. Now that was a whinge!!!!!
