About CLAG

Based in Oakleigh, City of Monash, the Community Life Action Group (CLAG) is a non-politically-aligned community group aimed at persuading Monash Council to preserve Oakleigh Pool.

On June 6th 2006, without any forewarning or public consultation, Council voted to close Oakleigh Pool and have no further aquatic facilities on the site.

The dismayed public presented a petition to Council, wrote letters and attended meetings—pleas to retain the pool falling on deaf ears. Residents of Oakleigh and surrounding areas gathered together for a public meeting in a show of unity to impress upon Council the importance of Oakleigh Pool.

On 8th August 2006, Council adopted a motion that re-opened the possibility of retaining the pool. Council promised to consult “by October” prior to any decision being made.

Consultations for the pool site took place between December and March. Council proposed four options for the site and the outcome of the consultation process indicated that the community wanted a complete refurbishment. Council unanimously voted to this effect on the 5th June.

Oakleigh Pool is now open, relax and enjoy

2010-02-18 11:57:34

The Oakleigh Swimming Pool has reopened and is now open to the general public. This is fabulous news, and our thanks go to the multitude of people who supported the pool and brought us to this point.

The Oakleigh Monash Journal has some coverage of the reopening: 'People's pool' is a dream realised.

Here are some of Anne Brew’s thoughts on the pool:

We were away when the pool first opened at the end of December but since our return in early January we have been to the pool lots of times this summer - I have lost count!

Sometimes we have arranged to meet friends, sometimes not, but each time we go there are people we know, or we see lots of people that we recognise from this area - and some we have never seen before. I don't know of another facility like that in Oakleigh. I know you know all this but I just wanted to reiterate!

This is a place where families with children of any age, teenagers and adults of any age can go to relax, play, exercise and socialise for an hour or six (all for the same, reasonable price). They can buy food and drink or bring their own. They can sit in the shade or the sun. It is a fantastic place. The café have even delivered me a coffee while I sat on the lawn! It was just like Fiji!

Everybody I have spoken to is so enthusiastic about the pool. While I am cynical about the politicians, they do have to be congratulated for recognising the level of support in the community and listening and choosing to find the money.

I really really hope Monash will maintain and promote the pool now that they have brought it up to this high standard. I know that on cooler days and for the winter months of the year the facility will be barely used and that will always be the case with a pool like this. However if they promoted the pool better and offered a range of activities (like diving, swimming and water aerobics etc) and one off events like the family fun day I am sure the pool will be sustainable.

Best wishes, with a splash,
—Anne

See you at the pool!
